VERB (BASIC)

 HELLO FRIENDS TODAY WE WILL LEARN ABOUT VERB WE WILL START FROM THE BASIC SO LETS START

ANY WORD THAT DENOTES AN ACTION IS VERB. Hence verb is also called DOING WORD 

  • VERB CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO TWO CATEGORIES.  
1  HELPING VERB                 2 MAIN VERB 

HELPING VERB IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS ONE IS MODALS AND SECOND IS PRIMARY AUXILIARY VERB 

  • USED TO ACTS AS BOTH MODAL AND ADJECTIVE
  • AUXILIARY VERBS - THEY ARE USED IN ADDITION TO OTHER VERBS. THESE ARE ALSO CALLED HELPING VERBS 
  • MODAL AUXILIARY VERBS - THEY ARE ALSO CALLED HELPING VERBS , CAN COULD MAY , MIGHT , SHALL , WILL WOULD , SHOULD, MUST , AND OUGHT TO ARE MODAL AUXILIARY VERBS 
EXAMPLE -  she can run fast

here can is modal and run is main verb 

EXAMPLE 2 - you should study English 

here should is modal and study is main verb

MARGINAL AUXILIARY VERBS - USED TO , NEED AND DARE ARE MARGINAL AUXILIARY VERBS . THESE MODALS CAN BE USED AS A MAIN VERB (NEED , DARE ) OR ADJECTIVE (USED TO ) IN A SENTENCE 

EXAMPLE -  I am used to sleeping late at night 

here am is helping verb , used to is adjective , and sleeping is gerund 

EXAMPLE - I need you 

here need is main verb 

IMPORTANT POINTS ON AUXILIARY VERBS 

RULE NO.1 - Modal auxiliary verbs are not used as main verbs. They are only used as helping verbs 

EXAMPLE - I can lift this box

here can is helping verb and lift is main verb 

he should work hard 

here should is helping verb , work is main verb 

RULE NO 2 - modal auxiliary verbs are not used in V1, V2 , V3, , Ing or s/es form . theri form do not change with subject , person or number 

EXAMPLE- She can help you 

here help is V1

you should understand you friends 

here understand is V1


USE OF MODAL AUXILIARY VERBS- 

CAN &COULD 

RULE NO1 - Can denoted power, ability and capacity

could denoted past ability power or capacity 

RULE NO2 - Can is also used for taking/ giving permission 

example - you can go now

RULE NO3 - Can denoted theoretical possibility 

example - everyone can make a mistake

RULE NO 4 - Could is used to show remote possibility

example - There could be a bomb under your seat 

RULE NO 5 - Can shows friendly request while could shows formal request 

example - can i take your scooter 

 could i take to mr. shukla 

MAY , MIGHT & MUST 

RULE NO 1 - May shows possibility 

example - it may rain tonight 

RULE NO 2 - May expresses willingness in an optative sentence

example - may you live long 

RULE NO 3 - We use may in subordinate clause if Principal clause is in present tense , and the subordinate clause starts with that / so that /in order that and the subordinate clause denotes a purpose 

example - we eat so that we may live 

RULE NO 4 - Might shows less possibility , may expresses possiblity 

example - He might pass the exam but seeing his intelligence i do not have much hope 

RULE NO 5 - Must shows greater possibility 

example - He stays in give star hotels and travels by air . HE must be rich 

RULE NO 6 - When may shows respect/ request , it is always used in interrogative form 

example - May i come in? 

NOTE - possibly / likely is never used with may 

example - He may possibly come tomorrow 

this sentence is superfluous 

he may come tomorrow  

this is right way to use
